Healthy Lifestyle
Healthy often means boring, and that's why we don't really like thinking about our bodies when we go about our day to day life. I often pushed it to the back of my mind whenever I was doing anything.
It's not that I'm uncomfortable with my appearance, it's just if I thought about my body it would make me responsible for looking after it. Added to this the fact that sometimes things with bodies go wrong, I just didn't like to think about it. I can't remember when I started to realise just how important my body is.
I'm sure it was later than most people realise, I'm not what you would call an active person. I do enjoy some activities like hiking, however I would never even consider going to the gym.
I do not really like the gym, I cannot put my finger on why. Perhaps it is because everyone around me is fat, or perhaps it is because Im too old to be using machines I cannot work out.
This is what made me consider my diet and health. When you are younger, eating fast food every day does not really make any difference. When you do start to get older though you can feel what it is doing to you every time you take a bite.
Whenever your diet is screwed up, it screws the rest of you up too. Your sleeping patterns get distorted, your hair looks bad, and your skin starts to dry out. Now I know why so many people have such bad skin.
So, what do you do?
If you are starting to feel old then chances are you want to change things you just do not know how. Change is not something that is easy in our lives. However just remind yourself that it is not impossible. If you are married, then you will find this much easier. Chances are your partner would like you to lose a little weight, and so he or she can provide the motivation.
If both of you try to lose weight then you will be much more successful. This is because there is less food around to tempt you.
Where do you start?
The first person you should talk to is your doctor, make sure you get a physical. Get him to take a blood sample and then tell you just how healthy you are. This is a very good thing to do as he will be able to check your cholesterol level, and anything else that I do not know.
If you suffer from a medical condition such as diabetes then you will want to discuss your diet and exercise regime with your doctor before you change anything. You do not want to make any problems worse.
After you have sorted things out with your doctor you need to decide which type of diet is best suited to you. You should eat a diet high in fruit and vegetables. Do not eat as much meat and carbs. These few simple steps really will help you to lose weight. You should also consider taking up some form of exercise. You could just go out walking if that is all you want.
When you get used to walking on a regular basis then consider visiting a gym. If your budget allows then hire a personal trainer. Not to worry if you cannot justify it though, you can start off on the treadmill, or have a swim.
Even though you are going to the gym you should not give up going on your walks. Walks are very good for you, and you get to have some nice conversations with your wife. If you are over 40 then you should not pay too much attention to weight lifting, you can still do it but it will take your body much longer to get used to doing these new strenuous activities.
I truly think that weight lifting is boring, I really hate it. I hate the thought of standing or sitting still and then lifting things that do not do anything. There has to be some form of incentive for doing these exercises, perhaps men just go to look at the girls in front of them!
The most important thing is that you must change. You have got to change your diet, get more exercise and listen to your doctors advice.
If your doctor allows you to go ahead then that is fine. If he does warn you about anything then make sure you pay attention and listen.
