Can We Believe The Food Labels?
The law in the US clearly states that all food must be labelled. Only food that is packaged separately within a larger container or carton is exempt. Even so, the outer package must also be labelled.
Before buying your food, do you ever read the labelling? Do you buy your food according to what the label says? Do you even believe what you read on the label?
If I was to tell you that most of what is written on these labels is nonsense. Would you believe me?
So why are they choosing to deceive us? The reason is pretty simple; all they care about is getting you to buy their goods.
Has their packaging just been redesigned or is the product really new and improved? If it really is new and improved then why were they selling you something worthless before?
Effectively decrease your food cravings
Labels do have certain advantages; it is just a matter of figuring out the fact from the fiction. All manufacturers are going to try and get you to buy their product, so you should try to ignore the hype on the labels. What you need to look for is information on the food itself. Just the actual facts; these are normally found on the back of the label.
What kind of information is usually printed on the back of these labels? It would usually tell you what has gone into the food, essentially the ingredients used.
The label will also tell you what the serving size is and how many servings you should be able to get. If you are shopping on a budget this can be quite important.
Additives are also usually written on the food labels. How much fat is in the product? Plus how many minerals, vitamins etc? Knowing what you are putting into your body can be useful when you are on a diet.
You can contact the manufacturer if the packaging does not give you enough information. You can give them a phone call, or if they have a website this can often be another good source of information.
Some foods won’t even have labels. Fresh foods found in a bakery or a local market or bake sale won’t be labelled. You should not be ashamed to ask the person you are buying it from what ingredients were used in making it.
The most important thing you need to remember about food labels is the front is the manufacturer trying to sell you the goods, while the back has all the essential information you need to know.
